COMMERCIAL LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE: A LOW BID WILL COST YOU IN THE LONG RUN

A low bid for Commercial Landscape Maintenance will cost more in the long run?

If you receive 4 landscape maintenance quotes and they’re all within 2% to 3% of each other, then choosing the low bidder makes sense. But, if a group of bidders are close and there’s a low bidder that is over 5% lower, then he might have missed something, or they need to get the “Sale” for a nice commission. If the low bidder is chosen, guess who suffers? Your landscape does! Low bidders will realize they low balled the job and they’ll start cutting corners in order to cover their cost and make a profit. It will cost you more money to fix the things they don’t do in the long run then it would if you had selected one of the contractors with a higher fee.

Smart Controller Wasting Landscape Water

Western Landscape Maintenance, Inc. recently took over a new HOA Landscape Maintenance account in North County San Diego. Whenever we take on a new account, one of the first things we do is an irrigation audit.

This HOA had an awesome Smart Controller already installed and had a subscription to the local weather station that updates the controller every few hours. So naturally, I thought this audit would be quick, easy and painless. After all, this HOA was serious about saving water and money.

HOA Landscaping Before and After

Landscaping Before and After photos are great tolls. If you’re considering a new landscape renovation for your community using drought tolerant plants, the costs could easily be in the thousands of dollars. Wouldn’t it be great if you could see what the end result would look like before plunking down your hard earned cash?

Before DesignAfter design

Recently I was asked to submit some ideas for a community in Del Mar that wanted to convert a grass area to low water shrubs. They were reluctant to pull the trigger, since it would be such a dramatic change, and they didn’t want a “desert” look that so many people attribute to drought tolerant landscaping.

Converting to Drought Tolerant Plants

Western Landscape Maintenance, Inc. has just converted Dead Fescuean area of water thirsty Red  to drought tolerant plants that will increase this HOA’s water savings dramatically!! We removed over 16,000 square feet of Red Fescue on one of the slopes at this HOA. Red Fescue is a plant with a LARGE appetite for water. In order to keep this  450 foot long stretch of fescue  green, we had to water it twice a day, 6 days a week, during the summer months. YIKES! That’s a lot of water.

North County HOA Landscaping and Tree Safety

For North County HOA landscaping, the fallTree destroys car and winter months are the best months for  tree pruning. The main reasons for pruning ornamental and shade trees include safety, health, and aesthetics.

Pruning for safety (See the article “Are Your North County Trees A Safety Hazard?”) involves removing branches that could fall and cause injury or property damage, trimming branches that interfere with lines of sight on streets or driveways, and removing branches

that grow into utility lines. Safety pruning can be largely avoided by carefully choosing species that will not grow beyond the space available to them, and have strength and form characteristics that are suited to the site.
